I was told by a prior mold inspector that I may have mold, but he didn't test properly. Then I had another guy come out and charge me for putting together a mold remediation protocol, and he declined to do additional testing since the first guy had already done it. I then called Anderson Restoration to come out and do the work - I expected the fees to have been in the range of $10k-30k, and that's not counting the disruption and expense of moving out and getting a rental home while they do the work. But when Nicolas from Anderson Restoration came out, he told me to pump the brakes, take a step back, and let's see if this is actually mold in the first place, because he was skeptical. He gave me the names of a couple of reputable mold testing companies (shoutout to Blake Salcetti and Dean Cox from Texas Mold Advisors). They came out, tested properly, and concluded I don't have mold - what I'm seeing are just fruit fly droppings and can be easily handled. Anderson saved me an enormous amount of hassle and expense, and you can bet I will refer them to anyone I know who needs mold restoration or water damage restoration work done. Thank you.

In March of 2024 a valve broke in my upstairs bathroom causing water damage to it and the kitchen below it. Anderson was recommended by my insurance company so I used them for the cleanup, dry out and restoration. They did an excellent job in all areas. I was so grateful and impressed with the work and professionalism they showed but I was glad to be done with them. Little did I know I would need them again. In December 2025 a pipe broke in the same bathroom causing flooding in the kitchen again. I immediately called Jared and asked if he remembered me. He said of course! What can I do for you? I told him what happened and he sent a team. Again they were prompt, professional and sensitive to my needs. They don’t mind going the extra mile for you even negotiating with the insurance company. I highly recommend Anderson Restoration.

He is doing an amazing job working with my insurance and providing timely estimates. I could not have asked for a better team!

Why Hardwood Floors React So Strongly to Water

Many Houston homeowners’ first experience with wood floor water damage is usually caused by moisture. It can feel confusing and stressful, especially if you are not sure what to do next or how bad the damage really is.

Hardwood flooring is made from natural wood, and wood is not waterproof. It naturally absorbs and releases moisture from its surroundings. This process happens slowly under normal conditions, but when water enters too quickly or stays too long, problems begin.

Houston’s climate increases this risk. Heavy rainstorms, high humidity, and sudden temperature changes all create conditions where moisture can enter homes and businesses. According to Baker Institute, the Houston area experiences frequent intense rainfall events that increase the risk of indoor floor water damage.

When water reaches hardwood flooring, it does not stay on the surface. It moves into the wood fibers. If moisture enters unevenly, such as from beneath the floor or along seams, the boards expand at different rates. That imbalance is what causes a warped wood floor.

This is how a simple leak can turn into serious water-damaged floor conditions if it is not addressed properly by top water damage restoration companies in Houston.

Water Damage on Hardwood Floor: Why Warping Happens So Fast

Warping does not require flooding. Even small leaks can cause visible damage if water sits long enough.

Here is why it happens quickly:

Wood absorbs moisture through seams, joints, and unfinished edges. Moisture trapped below the surface dries much more slowly than visible water. As the wood expands, pressure builds and forces boards to change shape.

This process can begin within hours. If moisture reaches the subfloor, the risk increases significantly. What starts as a minor issue can quickly become a full water damaged hardwood floor problem if drying is delayed or done incorrectly.

The Most Common Types of Hardwood Floor Warping

Not all warped floors look the same. Knowing the differences can help you understand how severe the problem may be.

Hardwood floor cupping

Wood floor cupping occurs when the edges of the boards rise higher than the center. This often points to moisture coming from below the floor, such as from a slab leak or damp subfloor.

Hardwood floor buckling

Hardwood floor buckling is more severe. Boards lift away from the subfloor or push upward dramatically. This usually means significant moisture exposure or prolonged floor water damage.

Warped hardwood floor

A warped wood floor may include twisting, lifting, or visible unevenness across multiple boards. These changes often indicate a moisture imbalance that has not been resolved.

Floorboards bowing

Floorboards bowing refers to boards curving along their length. It may show uneven seams, lifted edges, or twisting that affects both appearance and safety.

Signs of water damage on hardwood floors: You Should Not Ignore

Early detection can make a major difference in repair costs and disruption.

Common signs of water damage on hardwood floors include:

  • Raised edges or uneven seams
  • Dark stains or discoloration that were not there before
  • A damp or musty smell near the floor
  • Soft or spongy areas when walking
  • Wet floorboards that do not dry after normal cleaning

These signs often mean moisture is trapped below the surface. Even if the floor looks dry on top, hidden moisture can continue damaging the wood underneath.

Common Causes of Floor Water Damage in Houston Properties

Many homeowners assume storms are the main cause of damage. In reality, most floor water damage begins inside the home or building.

Common sources include:

  • Dishwasher or washing machine hose failures
  • Refrigerator water line leaks
  • Air conditioning drain pan overflows
  • Roof or window leaks during wind-driven rain
  • Hidden plumbing leaks beneath slab foundations

The Insurance Information Institute reports that water damage and freezing account for nearly one-third of homeowners’ insurance claims in the United States. Many of these claims begin with slow leaks that go unnoticed until visible damage appears.

What to Do in the First 24 Hours After Water Exposure

The first day is critical.

If you notice water near or on hardwood floors, take these steps immediately:

  • Stop the source of water.
  • Remove standing water using towels, mops, or a wet vacuum.
  • Increase air circulation with fans, but avoid high heat.
  • Do not sand, refinish, or remove boards without professional guidance.

Many well-intended DIY efforts make damage worse. Drying too aggressively or sanding while moisture is still present can permanently damage a water-damaged floor. It is still recommended to contact a water damage restoration company in Houston, like Anderson Restoration.

Can Warped Hardwood Floors Go Back to Normal?

Sometimes they can. Sometimes they cannot.

Mild cupping may improve once moisture levels return to normal, especially if drying begins quickly and water did not reach the subfloor. More severe hardwood floor buckling or long-term exposure often leads to permanent warping.

Key factors that affect recovery include:

  • How long has the water been present
  • How much moisture the wood absorbed
  • The condition of the subfloor
  • The type and thickness of the hardwood

Professional moisture testing is often the only reliable way to determine whether floors can be restored or need replacement.

How to Choose the Right Help When Floors Are at Risk

Not all restoration providers follow the same standards.

When comparing options, look for experience, clear communication, and documented drying practices. Many homeowners turn to the top water damage restoration companies in Houston because they understand local building conditions and common water sources.

A trusted Houston water damage restoration company can help stabilize your floors quickly while guiding you through the next steps with clarity and care.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Does homeowners insurance cover warped hardwood floors caused by water damage?

Sometimes. Homeowners insurance in Texas may cover hardwood floor damage if the water came from a sudden, accidental source, such as a burst pipe or appliance failure. Damage caused by long-term leaks, poor maintenance, or flooding usually is not covered unless you have specific endorsements or flood insurance. Always document the damage early and review your policy carefully.

How long can water sit on hardwood floors before permanent damage occurs?

In many cases, permanent damage can begin within 24 to 48 hours. Hardwood absorbs moisture quickly, especially in Houston’s humid climate. The longer water remains, the higher the risk of warping, buckling, and subfloor damage. Fast drying and moisture control are critical to improving the chances of saving the floor.
